This application activity provides students with an authentic and real time learning experience. By navigating the Toronto Police Service dynamic crime statistics pages, students will be able to access real and historical crime metrics, locations, and trends that will assist them complete a CPTED plan.
What is CPTED?
Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), pronounced sep-ted is a crime prevention approach based on a theory that the built environment influences the behaviour of people. The proper design and effective use of the built environment can lead to a reduction in the incidence and fear of crime, thereby improving the quality of life.

What is your Task?
Students will assume they are members of Toronto Police Services newly formed Crime Prevention platoon and are tasked to develop a CPTED plan that aims to reduce incidents of Break and Enter (B/E) in a Toronto neighbourhood known to have experienced this crime.
Students will access the TPS crime statistics site and choose an intersection within a Toronto community known to have been victimized by a Break and Enter. You can choose any intersection you like.
By referring to the above resource document, the TPS crime statistics site, and the How To tutorial, students will build their CPTED plan by incorporating recommendations that addresses the following 3 CPTED concepts:
- Natural Surveillance
- Natural Access Control
- Territorial Re-enforcement
Students can also incorporate any combination of CPTED strategies contained in the resource document that reasonable applies to their crime prevention plan.
The following steps will guide students in the completion of this assessment

Step #1: Access the Toronto Police Service Crime Statistics page highlighting the Major Crime Indicators Overview and scroll down until you see the heading Major Crime Indicators (MCI) Historical. This section contains 5 pages of information, you will focus on page 5 which is the Major Crime Indicators Map page. See picture below:

Step #2: Click on the Offence heading chevron to the right and choose B/E as well as click on the Neighbourhood heading chevron and choose a Toronto area. The below picture shows the cursor on the Offence heading.
Step #3: Once you have chosen a neighbourhood (I chose Rustic), then you will see green dots which represent the Break and Enters within that area in 2020. From here, you can zoom in and choose a Break and Enter location noting the main 2 intersections.
Step #4: I chose the intersection of Arkwright St. and Gracefield Ave. From here I will type this intersection in a Google Chrome browser and access the street view of this intersection. This feature will allow you to scan and navigate the immediate surrounding area and from here, you can begin to build your CPTED plan.
