During the mid-1800s, majority of the immigrants came from Ireland and Germany. Americans often viewed them as a threat to the current residents of the country (Stern & Axinn, 2018). Most of the immigrants were Catholics or Jews coming to a predominantly Protestant country. However, religion wasnt the main concern. This time of immigration was during industrial conflict (Stern & Axinn, 2018). Most of the immigrants were willing to take on jobs for lower wages and the radical political philosophies that the Germans introduced was upsetting to the American labor and industry (Stern & Axinn, 2018).
The United States has had a long history of xenophobia (fear of foreigners). Immigration has been a widely controversial subject over the decades. So much so, that there are many different immigration laws to determine how to handle the different immigrants that come over our borders. We have immigrants coming from the south border from Mexico and then we have immigrants coming from overseas from countries in the middle-east, Asia, and even as far as Australia. It makes sense to be weary of immigrants from the south because of drug cartels and to be weary of immigrants from the east because of terrorists and the dread of another 9/11 attack happening.
According to the NASW code of ethics, social workers should encourage respect for cultural and social diversity (NASW, 2021). Social workers are not to discriminate on any basis and that includes immigration status. The NASW-NYC Immigration and Global Social Work Committee tries to focus on advocating on behalf of immigrants and to advocate for laws, policies and programs that lead to justice and opportunity for all immigrant groups.
Despite the negativity of immigration such as terrorists and drug cartels, the whole of immigration policy is frightening for majority of immigrants. Families are fearful that they might be deported and sent back to countries where they cant afford to live and survive. The process of becoming a citizen in US is lengthy and expensive. Society gets caught up in the negative when there is overwhelming support to show that immigrants are law abiding, tax paying, gainfully employed, respectful and productive members of our society (Best-Giacomini & Levine, 2019). We wonder why immigrants dont just do the right thing and come to the States legally or line up if theyre unauthorized. However, there is no line for them to stand in. According to Best-Giacomini & Levine (2019), most dont even have family or employment relationship to allow them to access protection as a refugee. According to the NASW Code of Ethics (2021), a social workers primary mission is to enhance human well-being and help meet basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty.

The influx of immigrants from Ireland and Germany seen as threat then in the 1850s because the population growth had increased. Ireland and Germany immigrants accounted for 87 percent of the population. Ireland and Germany immigrants migrated between Boston and Baltimore. Ireland and Germany immigrants were looking for immediate employment or emergency financial aid doing the time it was an industrial conflict. Immigrants were willing to work for low wages and American residents weren’t. This caused opposition and agitation against immigrants. America residents lost their job or lost pay. Manufactures replaced skilled craftspeople with cheaper unskilled immigrants. There were laws then passed to prevent immigrants from becoming citizens such as the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. Americans has accused immigrants of creating poverty, crime, and civil unrest. With immigrants migrating to the U.S it affected the economic and culture development. Now there is a growing influx of Central American migrants that are coming to U.S. Border-Mexico and most of them are teens and children that are being placed in U.S custody. It is still the same reasons for Americans in the United States does not want immigrants in the U.S due to employment, education, social service, crime rates fear of terrorism, voting and drugs. President Donald Trump campaigned in 2016 promising a border wall of Mexico. President Donald Trump temporary ban immigrants. NASW advocate for immigrants by promoting social justice and avoiding racism, profiling and visa travel ban or otherwise preventing immigration opportunities on the basis of race, religion, country of origin, gender, sexual orientation, immigration status. NASW current projects for advocating for immigrants are Immigrant Friendly Criteria project, Interdisciplinary learning, and organizing grassroots social workers in response to ICE raids.
